Port City Java

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 24th, 2006

I’m currently sitting in a coffee shop in Charleston, SC checking email. The retreat at Camp David went well, RUF training in Atlanta was good, too. I’m here visiting seminary friends and then it’s off to Dallas for a few days of studying and seeing family.

Retreat!

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 12th, 2006

Tomorrow Ruth, Elisa and I will be heading off to a Thursday, Friday, Saturday retreat at Camp David with about 30 high school and college students. I’ll be doing the speaking on the Biblical storyline, and there will be about 10 non-Christian students there. Please pray for me as I speak and for the Christian […]

Mexico Increasingly Popular With Popes

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 10th, 2006

Looks like the new pope will be coming to Mexico City for the “World Meeting of Families” in 2009. Yesterday while in Spain he thanked “the beloved Church that makes its pilgrimage in the noble mexican nation and personally Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, archibishop of that city” for willingness to host the event. This will […]

AMLO’s Evidence

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 10th, 2006

The “informational” rally on Saturday attracted about 280,000 people, but apparently there was no new news. Today, however, AMLO showed two videos in a press conference as the beginnings of his evidence for electoral fraud. The first video shows a man stuffing extra ballots into a box in Guanajuato. The second video shows the meeting […]

5PM

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 8th, 2006

That’s when a horde of angry people will gather in the Zocalo in support of AMLO, who said earlier today: “We are seeing a typical case of electoral fraud in Mexico….the PAN learned quickly from the practices of the PRI.”
A reader asked - is there really evidence of electoral fraud or is AMLO just sore […]

A Church Chain Letter

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 7th, 2006

A few weeks back after we went to hear a military choir downtown, I lingered in the markets of the city center and eventually ended up in the metropolitan cathedral, where I discovered some things I hadn’t seen before.
My most exciting discovery was that for $1.20 USD you can take the “bell tower tour”, in […]

Calderón winning by a hair; AMLO calls for Saturday Rally

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 6th, 2006

With 99.44% of the district vote counted, Calderón leads by 0.41%. The IFE says there is no need to recount vote by vote, since that would be like doing the vote all over again. AMLO says that he will contest the election and that he wants his supporters to flood the zocalo on Saturday in […]

“Va por lo largo”

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 5th, 2006

A few minutes ago, a former counsellor from the IFE (Federal Electoral Institute) was on my one snowless TV channel, and he urged the press to calm things down. Even though the IFE will declare a result after they finish their district count sometime early tomorrow morning, everything still has to go before the highest […]

Octavio Paz Is My Friend

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 5th, 2006

I’ve been an admirer of Octavio Paz since I first read the Labyrinth of Solitude my freshman year of college. I’m now a bigger Octavio Paz fan because today I rediscovered Librería Octavio Paz down the street from me on Miguel Angel de Quevedo.
In the states, you have Borders and Barnes and Noble, with their […]

The Little Green Booklet

Posted by Peter Dishman on July 4th, 2006

Here’s a post that I did for Ken Shomo’s Blog awhile back…
On my desk I have a little green booklet that is very important to me. Inscribed on its drab green cover are these words: “United States of Mexico, Government Secretary, Non-Immigrant Migratory Document. FM3.” This document brings joy to my heart.

Why do I love […]
