Catching Up

Posted by Peter Dishman on October 17th, 2005

Last week, I spent a few days at the MTW Mexico retreat near Cuernavaca in a beautiful ex-hacienda called Cocoyoc. A pretty incredible place - you wonder what it must have been like back in the days of Cortes! I got back on Friday, and hope to do a lot of catching up here in […]

Posted by Peter Dishman on October 17th, 2005

From the Philidelphia Inquirer (free subscription required):

MEXICO CITY - As sales gimmicks go, “11.3 pesos” doesn’t quite have the ring of “99 cents.”
But Mexican shoppers such as Jaime Plata do not seem to care. Savings, not slick marketing, draw him to Waldo’s Dolar Mart de Mexico, this nation’s largest chain of so-called dollar stores.
On a […]

From the Houston Chronicle:

REYNOSA, MEXICO - After two months of dodging thieves and thundering trains during the perilous journey from Honduras, Marco Antonio Vasquez has finally reached the Rio Grande.

MEXICO CITY - Unfashionable Chiapas ended America’s 28-match unbeaten domestic run […]

Posted by Peter Dishman on October 4th, 2005

Reforma reports that “As Mexicans we like to save for emergencies, for old age and for education. But banks are not the preferred option…”
Here are the stats from the recent survey of about 1500 Mexicans (2.5% margin of error):
The percentage of people who said that they save went up from 47% in 1997 to 52% […]

Using “The List”

Posted by Peter Dishman on October 4th, 2005

I can’t really post too specific stuff here, so I’m going to send something out via my “supporter update” list. Sigh - going back to the old technology. The other option was to put a password on this update blog, also a possibility.

Bloomberg reports:
The hurricane likely will dump 5 to 10 inches of rain in parts of southeastern Mexico, the center said. Rainfall of 10 to 15 inches, with 20 inches in some places, is possible in mountainous areas of Veracruz and Puebla states. This rain could cause “life-threatening’’ flash floods and mudslides, the hurricane center said.
