The Next PRI Party Leader

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 30th, 2005

Interesting, and ironic given the PRI’s history, that the party should “choose” (there’s only one candidate) this fellow as the next party president. Don’t know much about him…
The Governor of Oaxaca, ulises Ruis, indicated that Rafael Rodriguez Barrera was the person who put on the table the name of the present President of the […]

Things we can say here in one word…

Today the police came out with drawings of the suspected “mataviejitas”. The mataviejitas would literally be “little old lady killers”. Try saying that as one word in English. Ha.

Another Reason to Subscribe to Reforma

Sundays are usually great days for traffic in Mexico City. Sometimes you almost feel like you are in some other, smaller, more normal city (until you hit a pothole).
This Sunday, however, traffic will be stopped up in the morning in some parts of the city as fifteen thousand runners compete in the […]

Back to School

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 25th, 2005

Reforma did a little survey of the effects on families of the return to school. Most of the results are as one would expect, but my favorite factoid:
On average, the city awakens at 6:27 AM.
The earliest risers are those that work, because they are on average up at 6:10 AM.

I’m below average on wakeup […]

Ghost Recon: Mexico City

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 25th, 2005

When I was in seminary, I lived in a house with some guys that really used to like playing a first-person shooter video game called “ghost recon”. In this game, you take the role of an elite military operative executing search and seizure and rescue missions in various dangerous locales. I guess you are […]

Stuff Over At Mexico Musings

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 25th, 2005

There are new entries in Mexico Musings, for those of you who normally don’t check there:
-I see possibilities for actually being able to import my car
-The mexican phone monopoly may be messing with internet phone service
-I get my mexican driver’s license
-american football in mexico kind of like high school football in texas
In a few minutes […]

I might be able to import my car!

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 24th, 2005

Up until recently, my understanding was that imported used cars had to be pre-1994 (or if 1994, some kind of pickup). This article in El Universal/The Herald seems to indicate that I might be able to pick up some Mexican plates soon for my 1994 Altima.
Importation of used cars authorized

TelMex interfering with Vonage and Skype?

Posted by Peter Dishman on August 24th, 2005

It appears that TelMex, the company that virtually monopolizes phone service in Mexico, may be degrading broadband users ability to use Vonage or Skype, the most popular voiceover IP services (think “calling through the internet”). From Jonathan Clark’s May 5 article in the Miami Herald Mexico Edition.

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a technology […]

It’s True!

When it comes to acquiring a Mexican driver’s license, you can do so without any exams or tests, even if you have never had a previous license. Just take along your passport and your FM-2 or FM-3 and you will be issued a license within an hour at the Secretaria de Transportes y Vialidad.
This quotation, […]
